女中の一人に「あなたもあのガリラヤ人イエスと一緒だった」と指摘されてペテロは、人々の前でそれを打ち消して、「あなたが何を言っているのか、わからない」と言った。その場にいづらくなってペテロは公邸の入口近くの別の焚火に身を移すと、そこでも「ほかの女中」がペテロを見て、「この人はナザレ人イエスと一緒だった」と指さした。女達のイエスへの証言は「ガリラヤ人イエス」から「ナザレ人イエス」へと、正確さを増してゆく。それに伴って、ペテロがそのイエスの弟子であることへの人々の確信も強まっていくのである。そうなれば、イエスが捕らえられたように弟子であるペテロも捕らえられるかもしれなかった。ひとつを隠そうとすれば多くの嘘が必要になる。
