「大きな隔たり」
弟子たちはみなイエスから逃げ去ったが、ペテロは遠くからイエスを追いかけ、公邸の中庭で焚き火の周りに座っている人々に紛れていた。ペテロは「遠く」からイエスに従っていく。ペテロの目はまだイエスの姿をとらえていたが、二人の間には明らかに大きな隔たりが置かれていた。その「隔たり」の意味するものは何か？

まだ、夜は開けておらず、群衆は「大祭司カヤパの公邸の「中庭のまん中に火をたいて座っていた」（ルカ22:55）。
弟子たちはイエスが捕らえられるとイエスを見捨てて逃げ去っていた。しかし、ペテロは、一旦は逃げ去ったものの、途中から引き返し、「そのなりゆき」を見とどけようとして、「遠くから」イエスについて行き、焚き火の周りに座っている人々のなかにまぎれて、彼らと一緒に座っていた。そして「イエスを監視していた人たちは、イエスを嘲弄し、打ちたたき、目かくしをして、「言いあててみよ。打ったのは、だれか」ときいたりした。 22:65そのほか、いろいろな事を言って、イエスを愚弄した。ルカ22:63~65）口語訳聖書
ペテロは捕らわれたイエスのすぐ近くにいた。しかし、夜の闇に隠れるようにして人々の中にいるペテロとイエスの間は途方もなく遠いものとなった。このイエスとの乖離は突然発生し、現実のものとなったのである。ペテロの目はまだイエスの姿をとらえていたが、二人の間には明らかに大きな隔たりが置かれていたのである。
