神の国には食卓があり、人は神のパンと葡萄酒をいただく。魂の飢えは満たされ、激しい渇きは癒される。今がその時である。

イエスが地上にて弟子とともにパンを食し葡萄酒を飲むのはこの時が最後になる。イエスは「終わりの日」が来るまで、葡萄酒を飲まれることはない。（Ⅰコリント15:24~25） それはイエスの十字架と復活による「新しい契約」は、神の国が立つ日まで、決して更新されることはないとの意味である。
イエスの流された血では不十分であるとして、様々な「新しい契約」が偽預言者によってつくられても、その「新しい葡萄酒」を飲んではならない。
この夜をもって「過越の祭」は終わった。教会は過越の食事から、聖餐式を守る新しい時代に入ったのである。律法と契約の旧約聖書は「廃れた」のではなく、満たされ、成就することによって「新しい契約」となったのである。
