エルサレムの「終わりの日」には「戦争や戦争のうわさ」が飛び交う。戦争は「確かに起こる（起らねばならない）」。やがてエルサレムは戦争によって陥落する。しかし、それは「終わり」ではない。

「こうしたことはまず起らねばならないが、終りはすぐにはこない」。（ルカ21:9）
「戦争」は終わりのしるしとして、まず起こる。しかし、戦争は「終わり」のしるしであって「終わりそのもの」ではない。「終わり」はイエスの十字架と復活である。そして、今やイエスの身に「戦争」よりも大きな破壊が加えられようとしている。エルサレム神殿は土台に石の一つも残されないほどに破壊されるようにイエスは十字架につけられる。しかし、イエスは死からいのちに甦られ、ここに見えない「神の神殿」が信じる者に立ち上がるのである。

「戦争の地」
ユダヤの地には、マカバイ戦争（BC167）、ローマ戦争（AD68）、キトス戦争（AD115）など、ユダヤ独立を目指す戦争があったが、戦争によって地に平和がもたらされることはなかった。福音は戦争の地で伝えられたのである。

「終わりの時」
「終わりの日」に、まず「戦争と戦争のうわさ」がある。人間の歴史の中で、人がその「うわさ」を聞かなかった時はない。戦争は人を「終わりの時」に立たせる。戦争は人間の悲惨である。しかし、イエスは十字架において人間の経験するすべての悲惨を引き受けられ、死の中から甦り給うた。人間はイエスによって悲惨を栄光に、死をいのちに変えるのである。

戦争について、イエスは「そういうことは確かに起こる」と言われた。
現代も我々は戦争の中にあり、戦争とかかわりのない人間はいない。人は戦争の被害者であると同時に加害者である。

新改訳聖書
主は地の果てまでも戦いをやめさせ、弓をへし折り、槍を断ち切り、戦車を火で焼かれた。やめよ。わたしこそ神であることを知れ。わたしは国々の間であがめられ、地の上であがめられる。」
それでも「戦争」と「戦争のうわさ」は地から消えないであろう。そして、それは「世の終り」ではない。地には「戦争」以上の「戦い」があるからである。戦いは必ずしも武器をとる必要はない。むしろ、武器によらない戦いがあり、天と地が激しく対立し、それはまもなく起こるとイエスは語られたのである。
