　＜イエス宮を出でてゆき給ふとき＞

イエスは「神殿」の境内から外に出て行かれた。「神殿」はソロモンによってエルサレムに建築されたがバビロン捕囚の際に破壊され、BC516年第二神殿として再建された。BC20年、ヘロデ大王によって修理と拡張工事が行われて完成し「ヘロデの神殿」と呼ばれた。大理石で造られた神殿は陽の光を受けて白く輝き、数キロ離れたところからでも見ることができたという。（エルサレム博物館に模型が展示されており、その全容を見ることができる）

　＜弟子たち宮の建造物を示さんとて御許に來りしに＞

「ソロモンの神殿」には100トンを超える巨石が切り出され、正確な長方形のブロックにして運ばれ、現地で組み合わされた。ヨセフスは建設が46年かかったと記録している。弟子たちは威容を誇る「ヘロデの神殿」にイエスの目を向けさせようとして、指差す。そして、「弟子たちの一人」が「先生、ごらんなさい。なんという見事な石、なんという立派な建物でしょう」（マルコ13:1）とイエスに語りかけた。彼らは神殿の「見事な石と奉納物とで宮が飾られていることを話していた」（ルカ21:5）のである。
