律法学者、パリサイ人たちが「預言者の子孫」なので「預言者を殺しし者の子」とされるのではない。彼らが預言者を否定するので、「かの預言者を殺害した者たちの子」と呼ばれるのである。

「イエスを殺した者」
私はイエスを殺した者の子である。私の罪がイエスを十字架につけたのだ。「私」という存在がそれを証明している。イエスはそれを責め給うのではない。贖い給うのである。

「預言者を殺した者たちの子孫」
私は「私」になるまで、どれほど多くの神の遣わされた方々を殺したことだろう。しかし、私は彼らに導かれてイエスに出会い「私」になった。だから、私は今自分が退けられることにも、かすかな希望を感じるのである。

律法学者やパリサイ人たちは、殉教した預言者の墓を建て、もし自分たちがその時代にいれば、預言者が血を流すようなことはなかったと言って誇るが、その行為そのものが預言者の子孫であることを証している。律法学者、パリサイ人たちが「預言者の子孫」なので「預言者を殺しし者の子」とされるのではない。彼らが預言者を否定するので、「かの預言者を殺害した者たちの子」と呼ばれるのである。
律法学者やパリサイ人たちのなすべきことは殉教した預言者の墓を建てることではなく、先祖の過ちを悔い改めて、預言者の語る預言を認めることであった。しかし、彼らは依然として預言者を殺害した先祖の教えを引き継ぎながら、殉教した預言者の墓を建てて、自分たちは先祖のようではないと胸を張るのである。
信仰の過ちは信仰者自身の行為によって明らかにされる。その義人らしい行為そのものが彼らの偽善を告発する。偽善者を裁くに及ばない。偽善者はその偽善によって自らを裁くのである。
