自分に都合が悪い時に使われる「分かりません」は便利なことばである。不利になることを隠して「分かりません」という。それが証拠には「分からないので教えてください」とは決して言わない。

自分に都合の悪いことに口を閉ざす。しかし、私が口を閉ざすとイエスも「わたしも言うまい」と沈黙される。イエスの言葉を聞きたいなら、都合のわるいことに心を開くことである。そうすれば都合の悪いことが変化をおこす。

イエスの「我も何の權威をもて此等のことを爲すか汝らに告げじ」は、「何の権威によるのか」への雄弁な答えであった。
ヨハネのバプテスマが「天から来た」ように、イエスの権威も「天から」のものである。
祭司長、民の長老たちの「わかりません」は、わからないのではなく、都合の悪いことを言い逃れるための方便である。
人はしばしば、「わらりません」という。わからないのではなく、知りたくないのである。
しかし、イエスは、「わかりません」という祭司長、民の長老たちの答えをもって彼らとの会話を閉ざすことはなさらなかった。イエスは、それがご自身を追い詰めることになると知られても、祭司長、民の長老たちとの会話は続けられるのである。
時に人は、知りたくないことについて、「わかりません」と神に祈ることがある。しかし、主は傍らにあって忍耐強く語り続けられる。
