＜苗はえ出でて實りたるとき、毒麥もあらはる＞
人々が眠っている間に、秘かに蒔かれた毒麦の種は、麦が発芽するのと一緒に芽を出した。毒麦は麦と一緒に成長し、やがて麦が実をつけると、毒麦も実をつけ、農夫は初めて毒麦の存在に気づいた。
＜苗はえ出でて實りたるとき、毒麥もあらはる＞
毒麦は芽を出したところでは麦と見分けるのは農園の働き人にとっても難しい。しかし、成長して実をつける段階でははっきりそれとわかる。

「似て非なるもの」
しばらくすると新芽が出て、畑は緑一色に染まった。麦が実をつける頃になって敵が仕込んだ大量の「毒麦」が姿を現した。
「良き地」にも「似て非なるもの」が混在する。
麦も毒麦も各々の「実」を結ぶ。毒麦がどれほど麦に似ていても、どこか麦とは違った風情がある。毎日畑を見る農夫は、容易くそれを見分けることができる。
デカルトは「よく判断し、真なるものを偽なるものから分つところの能力」を「理性」を呼ぶ（デカルト「方法序説」）。信仰者は「理性」を犠牲にする者ではない。

「毒麦の毒」
「毒麦 ζιζάνιον ジザニオン」には「毒」はないが、小麦粉に混入すると苦味が生じることからその名がある。その実をたべるとめまいや吐き気を起こすという。
「偽なるもの」は苦味の元であり、混入するとめまいや吐き気を引き起こす。

「見せかけの繁栄」
麦と毒麦の畑は他の畑よりも緑が濃い分立派に見える。だが、近寄ってみれば役にも立たないにぎわいでしかない。見せかけの繁栄には多くのものが騙される。

人々が眠っている間に、秘かに蒔かれた毒麦の種は、麦が発芽するのと一緒に芽を出した。毒麦は麦と一緒に成長し、やがて麦が実をつけると、毒麦も実をつけ、農夫は初めて毒麦の存在に気づいた。
毒麦は芽を出したところでは麦と見分けるのは農園の働き人にとっても難しい。しかし、成長して実をつける段階でははっきりそれとわかったのである。
「毒麦」と「良き麦」は農夫でさえも見分けがつかないほどによく似ている。成長して穂を出すころになって、やっと毒麦とわかる。「木はその実によって知られる」のである。
「毒麦」と「良き麦」は正反対の実を結び、両者を混ぜることは極めて危険である。毒麦の混ざった麦は、毒麦の量が少なくても、収穫された麦の全体を損なってしまう。
農夫は常に畑を見張って、毒麦と良き麦を見分けなければならない。
畑が青々と成長する姿をみて喜んでいる農夫は大きな禍を招いてしまう。
