明治元訳聖書は「投ぜんため」を「出(いだ)さん爲(ため)」と訳す。

英語訳では多くは「I am come to send peace on earth」King James Version　とするが、
New International Version　「 I have come to bring peace to the earth. 」
Young’s Literal Translation　「I came to put peace on the earth」などの訳もある。

これらの訳はイエスの言葉が、マタイ５：９「幸福なるかな、平和ならしむる者。その人は神の子と稱へられん」と矛盾するものではないことを示唆する。

イエスは地を平和ならしむる為に来られた。しかし、平和なきところに「平和」が投ぜられるとき、「剣の世界」は俄かに活気づくのである。

　＜劍を投ぜん爲に來れり＞

「剣　μάχαιρα　　マかイラ」は「短剣、ナイフ、剃刀」である。本格的な戦いの武器ではない。イエスがもたらされるのは、殺す為の「剣」ではなく「切り裂くためのナイフ」である。

並行記事ルカには、「わたしは、火を地上に投じるためにきたのだ。火がすでに燃えていたならと、わたしはどんなに願っていることか。 12:50しかし、わたしには受けねばならないバプテスマがある。そして、それを受けてしまうまでは、わたしはどんなにか苦しい思いをすることであろう」ルカ12:49～50）とあり、イエスの投ぜられる「劍」は第一義的には「十字架の受難」である。
