祭司長、民の長老たちはローマ兵らに金を与え、「弟子たちが夜中にきて、われわれの寝ている間に彼を盗んだ」と証言するように持ち掛けた。

祭司長、長老たちはローマ兵に多額の金を渡して、「弟子たちが夜中にやって来て、我々の寝ている間に死体を盗んで行った」（新共同訳聖書）と言い広めるように命じた。
「イエスの弟子たちが墓からイエスの遺体を盗み出し、イエスが死人の中から甦ったといいふらすかもしれない」というのは、十字架の直後から祭司長たちが最もおそれるシナリオであった。そのために、祭司長たちは総督ピラトにすがって武装兵に墓を寝ずの番をさせるように求めたのである。（マタイ27:62～66）

「真実」
祭司長、長老たちの言葉には、イエスの遺体が墓にないのは弟子たちの仕業であり、それはローマ兵が「寝ている間」の出来事で彼らに（そして自分たちにも）責任はないという意味が込められている。
しかし、彼らの主張はイエスの墓に遺体がないことを認め、その事実をエルサレムの人々に伝えることになったのである。真実を隠そうとする熱意からも、真実が漏れ出る。

「キリストの物語」
祭司長たちは「弟子たちがイエスの遺体を盗んだ」という物語をつくった。人はいくつのもの「物語」をつくる。しかし、真実のつくる「物語」は一つである。

祭司長、民の長老たちはローマ兵の報告を聞いて驚愕した、彼らがもっとも懸念したことが起こったからである。
祭司長、民の長老たちはローマ兵らに金を与え、「弟子たちが夜中にきて、われわれの寝ている間に彼を盗んだ」と証言するように持ち掛け、民に偽の情報を広めた。この計画は直ちに実行され、エルサレムの住民の間にひろまった。
祭司長、長老たちの言葉には、イエスの遺体が墓にないのは弟子たちの仕業であり、それはローマ兵が「寝ている間」の出来事でローマ兵にも、そして自分たちにも責任はないという意味が込められている。しかし、彼らの主張はイエスの墓に遺体がないことを認め、その事実をエルサレムの人々に伝えることになったのである。
真実を隠そうとする熱意からも、真実が漏れ出るのである。主イエスの復活を否定するために用意される方策が逆にイエスの復活を側面から証しされていく。
