マリヤたちが墓に到着した時、そこに「大いなる地震」がおきた。それは天より主の使いが降りてきて、墓の入口に置かれた大石を「わきにころがし」その上に座られたからである。「大いなる地震」はマタイ福音書のみに記録されている。
＜主の使い＞
母マリヤに受胎を告げ（ルカ1:26）、サタンの試みの後にイエスに仕えた御使いたち（マタイ4:11）は、イエスの墓を封印した大石をわきに転がし、マリヤたちにイエスの復活を告げる。（マタイ28:6）「主の使い」をルカ24:4、ヨハネ20:12は「二人」と記している。

「封印の石」
イエスを墓に封じ込めた大石はわきに転がされる。人間の理性はイエスの復活を封じ込めるために、いくつもの大石をもって墓を封印する。だが、そのいかなる「大石」も退けられよう。それを退けるのは人ではなく、天の使いである。「大石」が人の心を塞ぐも、主の御使いはその上に座し給う。

「超自然的出来事」
これは超自然的な出来事である。人間の理性は超自然的な出来事を否定しようとする。しかし、人間はそうすることができるほど自然を知っているわけでもない。

マグダラのマリアと他の女たちがイエスの墓に来ると、大きな地震があった。それは主の使いが天から降りてきて墓に近寄り、墓を塞いでいた大岩をわきに転がしたからである。主の使いは転がされた大岩の上に座っていた。
主の御使いがイエスの墓を塞いだ大岩をわきに転がしたのは、イエスの墓を訪れた女たちにイエスの復活を知らせるためである。女たちは封印された墓に入り、そこに主イエスの遺体はないことを目撃し、主の使いの蜜気によって主イエスの復活の証人となったのである。
祭司長、パリサイ人たちによる大岩による封鎖も、厳重な封印も、ローマの武装兵の警護も、ことごとく主の使いによって解かれる。主イエスの復活を止めようとする人間のあらゆる試みは神によって取り除かれるのである。
