これらの女性たちは自分の身を守ることができるからゴルゴタの丘に留まったのではない。彼女たちにその力はなかったが、自分たちになすべきことがあることだけを知っており、そして、それを成し遂げた。

「悲しみのマリヤ像」
大阪中津の「南蛮文化館」には「悲しみのマリヤ像」と呼ばれる油彩画が展示されている。この油彩画は福井県の藩医を勤めた旧家の土蔵の壁に竹の筒に収められて塗り込められていたのが発見されたものだという。作者も制作年代も不明だが、16世紀のイタリアで描かれ、日本に渡り、キリシタンによって守られてきたものと思われる。悲しみに目をふせる姿はそのまま祈りの姿勢である。

イエスの母マリヤは聖霊によってイエスを宿したとき、御使いガブリエルから「生まれる者は、聖なる者、神の子と呼ばれる」（ルカ1:35）と告げられ、それからのイエスの生涯に起こったことを逐一「心に留めて」（ルカ2:51）生きて来た。そのイエスは十字架にかけられ無残な死を遂げてしまった。マリヤの膝には傷ついたイエスの亡骸がある。これが「神の子」であろうか？ あのときの天使ガブリエルのみ告げは何であったのか、なお、母マリヤは心に思いめぐらすものがあったに違いない。
天使ガブリエルのことばに偽りはない。十字架に引き裂かれたイエスこそが、神から遣わされた「聖なる者。神の子」であった。母マリヤに抱かれたイエスはすでに甦り、復活の御姿を現わされる時を待っておられるのである。主イエスは母マリヤの目の涙をぬぐい給うのである。
