「上衣 χλαμύς くらムゆス」は「外套」で、ローマ兵の「軍衣、マント」であった。マタイは「緋色の上衣 κόκκινος コクキノス 深紅色」であったとし、マルコとヨハネは「紫の衣 πορφύρα ポルふゆラ 紫の衣」としている。（マルコ15:17 ヨハネ19:2）
兵士たちは、「ユダヤ人の王なら、それにふさわしいガウンが必要だろう」と、鞭打ったイエスから衣をはぎ取り、自分たちの軍衣を着せて、イエスをからかった。
＜緋色の上衣＞
「緋色の上衣 κόκκινος コクキノス」は κόκκος （木の実）からきた言葉で、紅色の原料となるえんじ虫の卵の密集している樫の実」に由来する。そこから深紅色の顔料を抽出し、緋色の上衣に染められた。

「からかい」
英語で「恥」を意味する dishonor は、「名誉を損なう」である。ローマ兵は裸のイエスに緋色のマントを着せて、その名誉を奪おうとした。しかし、イエスの名誉は子どもじみたからかいによって損なわれるものではない。

「ハントのイエス」
ホフマン・ハント（William Holman Hunt （1827-1910）は「世の光」で緋色のマントを着たイエスがランプを片手に戸を叩く姿を描いている。ハントはイエスが今も「緋色のマント」をまとって人々を訪れていることを知らせようとしているのかもしれない。

ローマ兵はイエスの着ていた上着をぬがせ、赤い外套を着せた。
ローマ兵はイエスを鞭打ってから衣を脱がせ、「緋色の上衣」を着せた。「上衣 χλαμύς くらムゆス」は「外套」で、ローマ兵の「軍衣、マント」であった。マタイは「緋色の上衣 κόκκινος コクキノス 深紅色」であったとし、マルコとヨハネは、「紫の衣 πορφύρα ポルふゆラ 紫の衣」としている。（マルコ15:17 ヨハネ19:2）
兵士たちは、「ユダヤ人の王なら、それにふさわしいガウンが必要だろう」と、鞭打ったイエスから衣をはぎ取り、自分たちの軍衣を着せて、イエスをからかったのである。
ローマの兵士が兵士の緋色のマントを着せてイエスをからかったのは、その周囲で「十字架にかけろ！」と叫ぶ民の空気に促されてのことだったろう。彼らにとってもイエスは特別な囚人であった。ゴルゴダの丘には異様な空気がただよっていた。
