「身を隠して」
ペテロは大祭司の公邸に集まった群衆に混ざって、焚き火に手をかざしていた。すると、「門番の女」がペテロを見つめて、「あなたもイエスと一緒にいた」と声をかけた。
身を隠すには大衆に紛れるのがよい。しかし、大衆の中から「思わぬ知り合い」が現れる。

「人に知られる」
人は自分の知らぬところで知られているものだ。自分が知らせたことではなくても、知られることへの責任というものがある。

ペテロは大祭司カヤパの公邸の中庭に、駆け付けた群衆にまぎれて座っていた。すると一人の女中がペテロを見出して「あなたもあのガリラヤ人イエスと一緒だった」と指さした。
ヨハネ福音書によると、イエスが逮捕されると、「ペテロともうひとりの弟子」（ヨハネ18:15）がイエスについて行った。「もう一人の弟子」が誰であるかは不明である。「この弟子は大祭司の知り合いであったので、イエスと一緒に大祭司の中庭に入る」ことができた。「しかし、ペテロは外で戸口に立っていた」ので、「大祭司の知り合いであるその弟子が、外に出て行って門番の女に話し、ペテロを内に入れてやった」。（ヨハネ18:15~16）
ペテロは大祭司の中庭で「火にあたっていた」（マルコ14:67）のである。
すると「ひとりの女中（大祭司の女中のひとり マルコ14:67 門番の女 ヨハネ18:16）」がペテロを見つめて「あなたもあのナザレ人イエスと一緒だった」と言った。（マルコ14:67）
ペテロはイエスに死刑が宣告され、顔につばきをかけられ、こぶしで、平手でたたかれ、愚弄されるのを見ていた。黙って、人々とかがり火を囲んで座っているしかなかったのである。するとかがり火に照らされたペテロの顔をじっと見ていた大祭司の女中が、「この人はイエスの仲間だ」と告げたのである。
ほんの数時間前に、剣をぬいてイエスを捕らえようとする者たちに立ち向かったペテロは、すでになく、ここにいるのは何とか人々の陰に隠れ、闇にまみれてイエスを窺うペテロであった。
「あなたもガリラヤのイエスと一緒にいた」という声はイエスが捕らえられた大祭司カヤパの公邸の中庭でこそ聞かれるのである。
