イエスは二人の男の証言には沈黙され、大祭司カヤパの「あなたは神の子、メシアなのか」との問いには口を開かれ、ご自分が「神の子、メシア」であることを明らかにされた。それだけでなく、イエスは十字架の後に復活し、「全能者の右に坐し」、天の雲に乗って再臨されると告げられたのである。
おどろくべきことばであった。大祭司カヤパはそのすべてを聞き取ることができなかった。イエスのことばを民衆に聞かせるわけにはいかない。追い詰められた大祭司カヤパは直ちに事態を治めるべく席を蹴って立ち上がったのである。
