イエスが「不利な証言」に沈黙されるのは、不毛な議論を避けるためであったろう。イエスの戦いは彼らの求める「死」そのものにあった。

二人の男の証言は明らかに曲解であったが、イエスは何も答えられなかった。そこで大祭司カヤパが立ち上がり中央に進み、イエスに「何も答えないのか。これらの人々があなたに対して不利な証言を申し立てているが、どうなのか」（口語訳聖書）と問いかけた。
今や裁判を導くのは大祭司カヤパではなくイエス御自身であった。それに気づいてカヤパはいら立ちを隠せない。
十字架と復活は人間の介入することのできないところで定められたのである。何人もこれを定めることも否定するすることもできない。
