「偽証者」
祭司長たちや最高法院全体は、イエスを死刑にするために「証拠」を求めたが得られず、「偽証者」を探したが見つからなかった。それは民衆のイエスへの信頼を意味した。それによって祭司長たちイエス処刑への意思は逆に強まるのである。真実が現れるとき、闇の力は勢いづく。

「証言」
ある証言によって人が罰せられたとき、それが「偽証」であることが判明した場合に、偽証者にはその証言によって下された判決が課せられた。「証言」はそれがもたらすものと同等の責任を負わなければならない。

夜が明けると、「人民の長老、祭司長たち、律法学者たちが集まり、イエスをユダヤ人の最高議会（サンヘドリン）に引き出した」。（ルカ22:66）
彼らは「イエスに不利な証拠を見つけようとして」、「イエスに不利な偽証を求めた」が、「得られなかった」。（マルコ14:55）
当時のユダヤはローマ帝国の支配下にあり、囚人を死刑にする権利はローマからの支配者にあった。そのため、ますユダヤ人の最高議会であるサンヘドリンが招集され、イエスを有罪にしたうえで、ローマ法にしたがってイエスを十字架にかける計画が実行されたのである。イエスを有罪とするには「証人」が必要であり、サンヘドリンは「偽証」を求めたのである。すると偽証者が沢山現れたのである。
「偽証者 ψευδόμαρτυρ プセウドマルトゆル」は「ψευδής 偽りの ＋ μάρτυρ 証言者」であり、文字通り偽りの証言を行う者のことである。
サンヘドリンもイエスを正当な裁判をもって有罪とすることはできなかった。そこで「偽証」を求める暴挙に出た。
律法は偽りの証言をした者には、その証言のとおりに証言者になせと命じている。（申命記18:18~19） イエスを死刑あたいすると偽りの証言をした者は、その証言に従って自らが死刑に処せられたのである。しかし、今やユダヤ人の最高議会が「偽りの証言」を求める偽りの法廷が開かれたのである。
