ペテロが剣を抜いてイエスを守ろうとするのをご覧になって、イエスは「もしわたしが願いさえすれば、すぐにでも、十二軍団にも余るみ使いを送ってくださる」と答えられる。「軍団 λεγεών れゲオーン」はローマ帝国の一軍団の単位で六千人からなる。十二軍団は七万二千人の大軍団を意味する。
ソドムとゴモラの町に審判が行われたとき、神は三人の御使いを遣わされた。（創世記18:2） ソドムとゴモラの堕落を裁くのに三人の御使いで十分であった。今、イエスは天の父に乞うなら、神は七万二千人からなる十二軍団の御使いを遣わすこともおできになると言われるのである。しかし、イエスはそうなされなかった。それは、主イエスの十字架と復活こそが、天の十二軍団にまさる、大いなる神の御業であるからである。
