「剣や棒で」
イエスを捕らえるために祭司長や、民の長老たちから遣わされた人々は、剣や棒を携えてユダとローマ兵の後について来た。イエスと弟子たちを捕らえるのに、「剣や棒」は必要でない。彼らは実に弱い人々である。しかし、この人々を捕らえるのに「剣や棒」は役に立たない。彼らは「剣や棒」で捕らえることができないからだ。

真夜中のイエス捕縛はアッという間の出来事であった。すべては祭司長、民の長老たちの周到な準備により、狭いゲッセマネの園は松明をかざし、手に剣や棒をもつ群衆によって包囲され、その先頭にイエスの12弟子の一人イスカリオテのユダがいたのである。この群衆は祭司長、民の長老によって密かに招集され、差し向けられた人々だった。
イエスを裏切るのはイスカリオテのユダだけではなく、イエスの愛された弟子たちをはじめ群衆にまで及ぶ。私たちは、群衆に混じって、手に棒を握る自分の顔を見出さないだろうか？
