「三たび祈る」
イエスは三度祈られたが、弟子たちは最初の祈りは途中で寝入ってしまい、二度目の祈りも聴き遂げることができず、三度目の祈りは最初から寝入ってしまっている。
三度の祈りは「同じ言葉」であったが、同じ言葉の繰り返しではなく、それぞれに違った意味と内容の祈りであったに違いない。人は祈り終わるとき、祈りを始めたときとは違った自分として立ち上がる。

二度目に戻られると弟子たちはやはり寝入っていた。イエスは彼らが寝入るままにされて、祈りの場に戻られ、三度目におなじ言葉で祈られた。
イエスは三度、「わが父よ、もしできることでしたらどうか、この杯をわたしから過ぎ去らせてください。しかし、わたしの思いのままにではなく、みこころのままになさって下さい」（マタイ26:39 口語訳聖書）と祈られた。しかし、祈りは繰り返せば聞かれるというものではないと教えられたイエスを思えば、それは同じ言葉であっても、違った意味をもつ3度であったことは想像できる。しかし、3度の祈りのそれぞれの意味がどのようなものであるかは分からない。神と主イエス御自身の間に隠されているのである。
分かることは、3度の祈りによってイエスは神の御心のままに杯を飲み干されたことである。弟子たちは遂に、イエスと共に祈ることはできなかった。それは人が眠り込んでいる間にイエスがお一人で成し遂げられた十字架と復活であった。
