イエスが再びペテロ、ヤコブ、ヨハネの所に来られると、やはり彼らは寝入ってしまっていた。

「その目は重たかった」
弟子たちはイエスが「汗を血のように流されて」祈るイエスの間近にいながら再び「寝入って」しまう。この時「異常な眠り」が弟子たちを襲ったのかもしれない。彼らの目は「重たかった βαρέως バレオース bareōs {bar-eh‘-oce} 」は「重荷を負う」の意味。魂の耐えることのできない霊的な深みがあるのかもしれない。イエスは、私たちの魂が「目を閉じる」「重み」を負い給う。

イエスが再び、弟子たちのところに来られると、弟子たちは、また、寝入っていた。彼らはイエスと起きていることができなかったのである。
イエスは何故、繰り返し、祈りの場から離れて、弟子たちにところに来られたのだろうか？ イエスは弟子たちに「わたしと一緒に目をさましていなさい」（マタイ26:38 口語訳聖書）と求められている。それは、迫っている十字架が弟子たち自身の受けるべきものであるからではなかったか？ イエスは御自身のために「わたしと一緒に目をさましていなさい」と乞われるのではなく、「あなた自身の罪と救いのために、わたしと一緒に目をさましていなさい」と言われ、眠っている弟子たちのところに繰り返し「目を覚ます」ように促されたのではなかったか？
このとき弟子たちを襲った異常な「睡魔」は、単なる日中の疲れからくるものではなく、イエスと共に祈ることを妨げる霊的な意味をもつ睡魔であるのかもしれない。
