「更に、二度目に向こうへ行って祈られた。『父よ、わたしが飲まないかぎりこの杯が過ぎ去らないのでしたら、あなたの御心が行われますように。』」 新共同訳聖書
イエスは弟子たちから離れ、再び祈られ、「わが父よ、この杯を飲むほかに道がないのでしたら、どうか、みこころが行われますように」と祈られた。
イエスは、「わが父よ、もしできることでしたらどうか、この杯をわたしから過ぎ去らせてください」と祈り、「しかし、わたしの思いのままにではなく、みこころのままになさって下さい」。（マタイ26:39）と祈られ、再び、祈りに戻られると、それと同じことばで二度目の祈りを捧げられたのである。
ゲッセマネの祈りは神との激しい闘いである。イエスは人間の救いのために神と闘われた。イエスの勝利に「私」の救いがかかっている。
弟子たちは、イエスの祈りのそばで眠りこけていたが、イエスの復活の後には、イエスと共に祈る者となった。人はどれだけの血の滴り落ちるような苦悩をもって、自らの罪のために、神と格闘するだろうか？ それとも、イエスが復活された後も、なお、眠り続けるのだろうか？
