血のように滴る汗を流されて祈られるイエスのそばで、弟子たちは眠りこけていた。それをご覧になったイエスはでしたちに、「誘惑に陥らないように、目をさまして祈っていなさい。心は熱しているが、肉体が弱いのである」と言われた。

　＜誘惑に陷らぬやう、目を覺しかつ祈れ＞

「眠りの誘惑」は目を閉ざし、迫っている危機から意識を消すことである。

　＜實に心は熱すれども肉體よわきなり』＞

ペテロたちの「心」はイエスと共にあったが、肉体弱きゆえに寝入ってしまったのだと、イエスは言われる。
