ゲッセマネの園には三世紀頃ローマ皇帝テオドシウス1世によって建てられた教会があったが、戦禍によって破壊され、1919年～1925年、12カ国からの献金によって再建され、「万国民の教会」と呼ばれている。別名「苦悶の教会」とも呼ばれる。祭壇の前に大きな白い岩があり、イエスが最後の晩餐の後に祈られた岩といわれている。

「負いきらない苦悩」
イエスは迫り来る十字架のために苦しみにみちた祈りをささげられる。私は自分の罪の苦悩の深さを、ゲッセマネの祈りによって知る。イエスが十字架で背負われるのは人間が負いきれない苦悩である。

「真珠の涙」
「ゲッセマネの園」にはひとつの伝説がある。イエスが歩くと、花はすべてつつましく頭を下げて会釈したが、高慢なヨウラクユリだけは白い花を頑固に持ち上げていた。イエスはやさしく手を置いて、「ユリよ、そんなに高ぶるものではない」と戒めた。するとヨウラクユリは恥ずかしさに赤くなって頭をたれた。花びらの付け根には涙がたまっていたが、落ちはしなかった。今日ヨウラクユリはふつう赤か黄色で、純血の色は失われている。そしてうつむいた花の奥を覗くと、真珠のような涙が見えるという。

過越の食事が終わると、ユダはイエスを売るために外の暗闇に消え、イエスは「いつものように」（ルカ22:39）祈りの為にゲッセマネの園に行かれ、弟子たちはイエスに従って行った。夜のゲッセマネの園でイエスは弟子たちと少し離れた場所に行かれ、弟子たちにはそこで祈るようにと告げられた。「ゲッセマネの園」は「ケデロン川の向こう岸」にあった。（ヨハネ18:1）

イエスは数時間後の逮捕を前に、夜のゲッセマネの園で一人になられて祈られた。イエスは迫り来る十字架のために苦しみにみちた祈りをささげられる。人は自分の罪の苦悩の深さを、イエスのゲッセマネの祈りによって知るのである。イエスが十字架で背負われるのは人間が自らでは負いきることのできない罪と苦悩である。
