「その場にいない者にも」
初代教会の人々は集まりをもち、パンとぶどう酒による「聖餐」を守った。殉教者ユスティヌスによれば、選ばれた執事が聖別されたパンとぶどう酒を人々にわけあたえ、「欠席者のところへはこんでいった」という。（W・エッティング「カタコンベの教会」）「パンとぶどう酒」は全ての人々に与えられ、その場にいない者にはその所まで運ばれて与えられたのである。

「信仰の伝承」
初代教会の人々は迫害を逃れて、ローマの地下墓地 カタコンベで礼拝を守った。彼らが「イエスの肉を食べ、血を飲む」という話しを聞いてローマ人は彼らが子どもを殺してその肉と血を食べていると噂し、それが迫害の理由になった。信仰を誤りなく伝えることも信仰者の務めである。たとえ、それが絶望的であっても、伝え続けることを止めることはしない。

イエスは続いて杯をとり、感謝して弟子たちに与えて、「みな、この杯から飲め」と言われた。杯の葡萄酒はイエスの流される十字架の血の象徴である。「血 αἷμα ハイマ」は「いのち」の意味である。聖餐式のパンは引き裂かれたイエスの御身体を、杯の葡萄酒は流されたイエスのいのちをあらわす。
キリスト者とはイエスの肉と血、すなわちイエスの「いのち」をその身の「いのち」として受ける者である。
