「鉢にパンを浸す者」
「裏切る者」は一つの大皿を囲んで共にパンを浸して食べた者の中にいる。それは他者のことではなく、主は「私」に向かってそう言われるのである。

「特にあなたがたに言っておくが、あなたがたのうちのひとりが、わたしを裏切ろうとしている」。
（マタイ26:21 口語訳聖書）というイエスのことばは弟子たちに衝撃を与えた。「まさか私ではないでしょうね」と口々に問いかける弟子たちにイエスは、「わたしと一緒に同じ鉢に手を入れている者が、わたしを裏切ろうとしている」と明言されたのである。
パンはちぎって大皿の汁に浸して食べた。イエスと弟子たちは一つの大皿を囲み、パンを浸して食事をしていた。
弟子たちにイエスは「わたしといっしょに鉢に手を浸した者が、わたしを裏切るのです」（マタイ26:23 新改訳聖書）と答えられたのである。弟子たちは互いに顔を見かわして、思わず、鉢にのばそうとした手を止めたに違いない。しかし、弟子たちは、まもなく、大皿の汁にちぎったパンを浸して食べるように、イエスの引き裂かれた御身体と流された御血を贖いのしるしとして聖餐の食卓につくことになるのである。
