まさか自分がそのような道を行くとは思わずに歩む道がある。だが、そのような道にあっても神は私と共に在り給うのである。

イエスの言葉は12人の弟子たちからそれぞれの思いを引き出す。そのとき私は「まさか」と思うのである。

イエスが弟子たちに、「あなたがたの中のひとりで、わたしと一緒に食事をしている者（マルコ14:18）が、わたしを裏切ろうとしている」（口語訳聖書）と言われると、弟子たちは非常に心を痛めて、次々に「主よ、まさか私のことでは」と言い出した。「口々に εἷς ἕκαστος」は「ひとりひとり」の意味。十二人の弟子たち全員が「まさか自分ではあるまいか」と不安を抱いたのである。
弟子たちは「まさか自分が」と思った。しかし、「まさか」と思うことは根拠のないことではない。イエスに「まさか私ではないでしょうね」と言った弟子たちの全員が、翌日にはイエスからできるだけ遠くに逃げ去ることになるのである。信仰を全うする力は人にはなく、すべてを成し遂げられる主の恩寵による。
