マリヤがナルドの香油をイエスの足に塗ったのは、主イエスへの葬りの備えであった。香油を三百デナリに売って貧しい人々に施せたのにと叱責する弟子たちに、イエスは「この女のするままにさせておきなさい。わたしの葬りの日のために、それをとっておいたのだから」 （ヨハネ12:7）と言われた。マリヤは「イエスのからだに油を注いで、あらかじめ葬りの用意をした」（マルコ14:8）のである。
ナルドの香油は死者の体に塗られた。マリヤは十字架につけられる直前のイエスに油を塗ったのである。その香りはイエスの十字架の苦痛を包んだのである。
イエスの身体に塗られたナルドの香油は、十字架の死と死の腐敗を防ぐだけでなく、復活の「よき香り」としていつまでも芳香を放ったのである。イエスの足にナルドの香油を塗り、髪の毛でそれを拭ったマリヤは、イエスが埋葬され復活されるまでの間、イエスと同じ香りの中にいた。それがキリスト者の放つ香りである。
