「右に分けられた人々が、「主よ、いつ、わたしたちは、あなたが空腹であるのを見て食物をめぐみ、かわいているのを見て飲ませましたか。いつあなたが旅人であるのを見て宿を貸し、裸なのを見て着せましたか」と言ったのに対して、左に分けられた人々は「主よ、いつ、あなたが空腹であり、かわいておられ、旅人であり、裸であり、病気であり、獄におられたのを見て、わたしたちはお世話をしませんでしたか」と詰め寄る。注意深く読めば、左に分けられた人々のことばには主人が経験した困難に一つ一つ行為の確認をすることを避けていることがわかる。彼らは確信を持って「主よ、いつ、わたしたちは、あなたが空腹であるのを見て食物を与えず、かわいているのを見て飲ませず、いつあなたが旅人であるのを見て宿を貸さず、裸なのを見て着せなかったでしょうか」とは言えなかったのである。
それでも、「左に分けられた人々」は主人に対して忠実な僕であることを主張して止まない。しかし、隠れたところにいまし、隠れたことを見られる神が求められるのは、彼らの人々の前での信仰の告白ではない。
