神の痛みを知らずに神を知ることはできない。神を知る者は人の痛みを知る者のことである。私は神の痛みを知るまでは、人の痛みに気づくことがなかった。

人々は「いつあなたが病気をし、獄にいるのを見て、あなたの所に参りましたか」と最後まで王の言葉のすべてに覚えがないことを告白した。
王は病に伏し、その身は獄に捕われたとき、「あなたがたはわたしを見舞い、獄にたずねてくれた」という。ここにはイエスがまもなく捕らわれ、苦しみを受け、十字架にかけられることが暗示されているようである。その時、イエスを見舞う者はなく、捕われたイエスをたずねる者は一人もいなかったのである。
しかし、王は玉座の右に分けられた人々に「あなたがたは私が捕らわれ、苦しみを受け、十字架にかけられるときにも、あなたがたは、裸の私に着せ、病める私を訪ひ、私の捕らわれた監獄に来てくれた」と言うのである。
人々は耳を塞ぎ、「いつあなたが病気をし、獄にいるのを見て、あなたの所に参りましたか」と叫ばずにはいられなかったのである。この「叫び」はイエスを信じる全ての者の魂の声である。
