人の子が栄光の座につくと、地のすべての民が集められ、あたかも羊飼いが「羊と山羊」を分けるように、「ご自分の羊」を右に、「山羊」を左に置かれる。

「すべての国々の民」は「羊」と「山羊」が区別されるように、分けられる。
「すべての国々の民」は「人間」を意味し、すべての人々は「羊と山羊」が区別されるように分けられるのである。

「終わりの日」に「すべての国々の民」は「羊と山羊」が区別されるように分けられる。「すべての国々の民」は「人間」を意味し、「国や民族」の意味ではない。「終わりの日」にユダヤ人やある特定の国家、民族が選民として神の恩寵を受けるのではない。すべての国の民が集められ、一個の人間として「神の民」であるかどうかをそれぞれに問われるのである。

「羊と山羊」
羊と山羊は右と左に分けられる。中間のない分け方である。しかし、分けられた羊と山羊に、自分が羊か山羊かの自覚はない。何故自分が右（もしくは左）なのかを理解しないのである。ただ、分かるのは、羊か山羊かを分けるものが己自身の内にあることだけである。

人の子が栄光の座につくと、地のすべての民が集められ、あたかも羊飼いが「羊と山羊」を分けるように、「ご自分の羊」を右に、「山羊」を左に置かれた。
鳥占いで右方に鳥が飛ぶと吉兆とされ、「右 δεξιός デクシオス 」は幸運を約束した。右は受け取る側の手で
「吉兆、幸運」を意味する。「左」を意味するギリシャ語 ἀριστερός アリステロス は右の「吉凶」に対してい「凶」をあらわす。
マタイ25:32では、「羊を彼の右に ἐκ δεξιῶν αὐτοῦ」と言われ、「山羊」には単に「左に ἐξ εὐωνύμων」とある。「羊」は「彼の羊」であり、「山羊」は「彼の山羊」とは言わない。
イエス・キリストは「彼の羊」を知り、「羊」は牧者の声を知っている。だが、「山羊」は「彼の山羊」ではない。しかし、「羊と山羊」は終わりの日まで、「神の民」のように存在し続ける。存在するものがすべて「羊」ではないことを知るべきである。そして、それ以上に、自らが「山羊」として存在することに怖れと警戒を失ってはならない。
