「その人の油」
ある人が「あなたの内に燃える灯火の油を分けて下さい」と言っても、分けることはできない。たとえ、分けても、その人の内で燃え輝く油はその人以外の内を燃やすことにはならないからである。人には各々の内で燃える「その人の油」がある。その油が切れたら油屋に走り、自分で用意するしかない。

それでも「賢いおとめ」の「愚かなおとめ」へのことばには愛を感じにくい響きを聞き取ることはないであろうか？ 友の危機にはたとえ自分一人分の油でも分けて与えるのが友情というものでないのか。しかし、この思考は「灯火」に関する譬えの解釈を損なうものであろう。
「油壺」は一人分の油しか入っていないということは、自分の油は他の人の灯火の油として使うことのできるものではないことを示している。自分の灯火を消す危険を犯して「分け与え」でも、それによて他人の灯火を灯すことはできないのである。
「灯火」は神が一人一人に与えられる「光」である。その灯火が油が切れてほの暗くなったら、「わが暗をてらしたもう」神に祈れ。そうすれば、「審判をして勝とげしむるまでは傷る葦を折ことなく煙れる麻を熄ことなし」との確信に至るだろう。それが、「急いで油屋に行って自分の分を買いなさい」の意味するところである。
