「賢い乙女」は灯火とともに油を入れた壺を用意していた。「明かり」を消さないためには常に油を絶やさないことである。「油」は「御言葉」である。神の言葉は「私の油」として日毎に新しく補充し、たくわえられなければならない。「その日の灯火」のために「油壺」を満たしておけ。

「さらなる愚かさ」
賢い乙女は予備の油を持たない者が仲間にいるのに気づいて注意したに違いない。だが、愚かな乙女たちは友人の忠告に耳を貸さなかったようだ。一つのことに愚かな者は、さらなる愚かを重ねるものである。
