「時」は希望通りにはやって来ない。だが、主に信頼する者は「夜通し起きていよう」などと心配しない。

その日には明日のためにその日なすべきことをしたい。

人の子は「思わぬ時 ᾗ οὐ δοκεῖτε ὥρᾳ （考えていない、信じていない、そのつもりのない時）」に来られる。だから注意深く備えなさい。
「終わりの日」が来るのだから、仕事も学びもやめて待ち望もうというのは「目をさましている」ことではない。
マルティン・ルターは「たとえ世界が明日破滅に向かおうとも、今日私はリンゴの木を植える」と言ったという。
「終りの日」のために、一日中、祈り続ける必要はない。その時ための特別な日常や行動を求めるべきではない。なすべきことをその日になし終えることが備えである。その日に「なすべきこと」は、神が教えてくださるであろう。
しかし、信仰生活にも、「思わぬ時 ᾗ οὐ δοκεῖτε ὥρᾳ （考えていない、信じていない、そのつもりのない時）」が生じることを警戒すべきである。「思わぬ時」は不信仰の時であり、人の子が来られるのは、不信仰によって備えを忘れる時である。
