二人の女が臼を挽く。臼を上手に引くには二人の呼吸が合わなければうまくいかない。「息をあわせる」このできる相手であっても、その日には「一人は取られ、一人は残される」。「終わりの日」は人との絆が試みられる日である。「終わりの日」に耐えられる絆を求める。

二人の女がいつものように臼を引いている時に「その日」は来た。「終わりの日」は日常的な営みがなされている場ではじまる。粉を引き終わったらパンを焼こうという作業の最中でも「終わりの日」を忘れてはいけない。

その日には二人の女が一緒に臼をひいていると、一人は取られ、一人は残される。
ユダヤの臼には「つき臼」と「ひき臼」があった。「μύλος ミゆろス」は「ひき臼」である。臼を引くのは婦女子の仕事で、ふたりが向かい合ってひいた。
畑で働く男が、一人は取られ、一人は残されるように、二人で一つの臼を引く女が、一人は取られ、一人は残される。同じ仕事をしていても、人はそれぞれの信仰に従って決定的な時を迎える。
信仰生活のなかで「一人は取られ、一人は残される」ことを経験しない信仰者はいない。信仰は人間の絆の中に人から人に伝えられる。しかし、その信仰は人の絆によらず、個々の人間の内に築かれるのである。いずれが取られ、いずれが残されるかを問題にするよりも、残されるであろう自分が神に取られる不思議に思いを巡らすべきである。二人のうちこの自分が神に取られると信じる人は、神はもう一人を取られるとかたく信じることができるのである。
