ノアとその家族が方舟に入り、神がその入口を閉ざされる瞬間まで、人々の日常は続いていた。人々は「食べたり飲んだり、めとったり嫁いだり」していた。それらはみな、「その心に計ることがみな、いつも悪いことだけに傾く」ものとしての「日常」だった。悪を行うことが「日常」になると、人はその営みを異常とは考えなくなる。変わることのない「今日の飲み食い」になる。人は善いものであれ悪しきものであれ、この「日常」がいつまでも続くと考える。しかし、日常は永続しない。そこにも終わりのあることを知らなくてはならない。

「洪水になる前は、ノアが箱舟に入るその日まで、人々は食べたり飲んだり、めとったり嫁いだりしていた」 新共同訳聖書
大洪水にそなえてノアと家族が方舟に入り、神がその戸を閉ざされる時まで、人々は「食べたり飲んだり、めとったり嫁いだり」の日常が続いていた。
「その心に計ることがみな、いつも悪いことだけに傾き」、神がその創られた人を地の面から「消し去ろう」と御決意なさる瞬間にも、人々は「食べたり飲んだり、めとったり嫁いだりする」日常が続くのである。人は人類の審判が下るような腐敗のなかにあっても、「食べたり飲んだり」の楽しみがあり、「めとり、嫁ぎ」する希望を失いていない。
「かわらない日常」をみて、悪しきことなど裁かれることはないと思うのは間違いである。明日もまた「変わらない日常」があると思うのは、すでにノアの時代のなかにある。
