「隠された事柄」
「終わりの日」がいつ来るのかは隠された事柄である。天使も御子イエスでさえもそれを知らない。それは父なる神の内に隠されている。現された事柄には必ず「隠されたこと」が含まれている。隠された事柄は現されたことの意味を深める。「事を隱すは神の榮譽なり 事を窮むるは王の榮譽なり」 箴言25:2 明治元訳聖書

「終わりの日」がいつ来るかについては、誰ひとり知らない。すべての「終わり」についても同様である。ただ、終わりの来ることを知る者だけが今を生きることができる。その為に、神は「終わり」を内に隠されるのかもしれない。

「不確実なこと」
信仰は知らないことの上にも築かれる。不確実なことは神のうちにとども、現れを待つ。知ることのできない事柄は信じることを妨げない。

「子も知らず」
イエスは「その日」がいつかを自分は知らないと言われる。イエスの弟子たる我らが、どうしてすべてを知っている顔ができようか。信仰は「知らない」という事実を大切にする。

「終わりの日」がいつ来るのか、「その日その時」を知る者はいない。天使も御子イエスも知らない。それを知るのは父なる神お一人である。終りの日は、神にのみ属する事柄である。
天変地異や戦争が始まると、必ず「終りの日」を予見する者が現れる。彼らは人の心の不安につけこむ偽預言者にすぎない。かつて、彼らの予見が正しかったことはなく、これからも、この種の予見に従って「終末」がおとずれることは決してない。天使も御子イエスも知り得ず、父なる神のうちに隠されている事柄を人が知ることが出来得ようか。
「終りの日」は、人が個々の信仰の上に確信すべき事柄である。死が固有の死として人間に定めら、その日が父なる神のみに知られる以上、「終末」はすべての時代の、すべての人間に固有の経験として避けることはできない。時を知る神への信頼のうちに「主の日」を救いの完成として待ち望むべきである。
