マタイ24章は直接的にはAD70年のエルサレム陥落を予告しているが、同時に終末の日への預言になっている。
本節の「日は暗く、月は光を發たず、星は空より隕ち、天の萬象ふるひ動かん」の予告はAD70年のエルサレム陥落のときには見られなかったところから、終末の予告であると思われる。

「終わりの日」には日も月も光を隠し、星が流れ、天のもろもろの力は揺れ動く。ルカ並行記事「また日と月と星とに、しるしが現れるであろう。そして、地上では、諸国民が悩み、海と大波とのとどろきにおじ惑い、人々は世界に起ろうとする事を思い、恐怖と不安で気絶するであろう。もろもろの天体が揺り動かされるからである」（ルカ21:25~26）
イエスが十字架につけられると、12時から3時まで「全地が暗く」なった。（マタイ27:45） そしてイエスが埋葬された「週の初めの日の明け方、大きな地震がおこった」。（マタイ28:2）
マタイ24:29はイエスの十字架と復活の際に実現した。

「十字架と復活の日」
イエスが十字架につけれると「太陽は暗くなり、月は光を失い、星は天から落ち」、復活の朝「天のもろもろの力は揺れ動いた」。（マタイ27:45、28:2）「終わりの日」はイエスの十字架と復活の日として実現し、常に来るべき日として人の前に置かれている。

「終わりの日」
東北大地震のとき、私は家の外に逃れて、道路が「波打つ」のを見た。動かぬものが動くことを知った。「終わりの日」には動かぬと信じたものがことごとく動く。動かぬものが動くと知って、「終わりの日」は現実として始まる。

終りの日には、「太陽は光を失い、月は隠れ、星は空から落ち、天体は揺り動かされる」と告げられている。それは「終りの日」の描写であって、文字通りに解釈すべきことではない。天と地を創造された神は、被造世界を全破壊することを望まれることはないからである。しかし、それは「終りの日の患難」を軽く見積もることを容認するものではない。「患難」はどのようなものであっても、「太陽は光を失い、月は隠れ、星は空から落ち、天体は揺り動かされる」ごとくに人に苦悩をもたらす。
「大いなる患難」は「大いなる救い」に至るための道筋である。
