「耐え忍ぶ」
漢字で「耐え忍ぶ」の「耐」は「而（柔らかいヒゲ）」と「寸 （肘）」で「ひじを柔らかくして、ねばりのあるヒゲのように切れずにもちこたえる」の意味。「忍」は「刃（弾力がある強い刃）」と「心」で「しなやかで強い心」を意味する。「耐え忍ぶ」には柔軟でしなやかな心を必要とする。

罪を犯して打ち叩かれ、それを耐え忍んでも、何の誉れになるでしょうか。しかし、善を行って苦しみを受け、それを耐え忍ぶなら、これこそ神の御心に適うことです。
「最後まで耐え忍ぶ」は自らの罪への苦しみに対してではなく、「善」にもかかわらず受ける苦しみに対してである。人々の「愛が冷える」中でも、「愛」を失ってはならない。「愛の冷え」にも耐え忍ぶなら、神の御心にかなうことである。じっと我慢するのではなく、愛を持ち続けることが「救い」である。
