「ナアマンのジレンマ」
「杯や皿の外側」は律法学者やパリサイ人たちが作る出す様々な宗教的行為である。それらは見られるために行われ、信仰者らしい装いを与えるが、人間の内面をあらわすものではない。アラム人の将軍ナアマンはらい病を発症し、預言者エリヤに癒しを求めて馬と戦車に乗り預言者の家につけた。しかし、エリヤはナアマンを出迎えもせず、ヨルダン川で七度身を洗うように指示する。将軍ナアマンはエリアの素っ気ない態度に怒る。エリヤが出てきて、神の名を呼び、患部に手をおき、らい病を癒してくれると考えたからである。（Ⅱ列王6:1~14） 「手を挙げて神の名を呼び、患部に手をおく」などは「杯や皿の外側」にすぎない。ナアマンは癒されるために、まず「杯や皿の外側」ではなく「杯や皿の内側」を求める必要があった。

律法学者やパリサイ人たちは、杯や皿の外側は綺麗にするが、目に見えない内側は貪欲と放縦で穢れている。
「貪慾 ἁρπαγή ハルパゲー」は「強奪、略奪」の意味。「放縱 ἀκρασία アクラシア」は「放縦、不摂生」の意味。
外側は清めるが内側は「貪慾と放縦」に満ちているのが人の心である。そのことに気づかない信仰者は一人もいない。内側の穢れを知りつつも、外側を清めることしかできないことを悲しむのは、むしろ、生きた信仰であろう。そのことを教えられるのは聖霊である。
律法学者やパリサイ人たちの偽善は、外側をいかにも綺麗に見せようとする内側の「貪慾と放縦」である。いかに巧みに外側を清めても、その「清さ」が彼らの偽善を告発するのである。
