果すつもりのない誓いや約束を立ててはならない。誓いや約束は、すべて神に誓うのであり、果さずに済ませる人は自らを損なうのである。
はじめから果たすつもりのない誓いは厳に戒められる。人はそれによって人と自身と神を欺くことになる。では、誓いをたてさえしなければよいかといえば、そうではない。誓いや約束の行為が悪ではない。果たす意思もなく信仰深く見せるための偽善が戒められるのである。
