「居心地」
座ったことのない上席は、思わぬ下座につくのと同じに居心地の悪いものである。
だが、上席の居心地のよさを覚えてしまうと、それ以外には違和感を覚えるようになる。
人は座る席によって自分を変える。

「最下座」
ある人は宴席に行くと自分から最下座に座ることにしていた。すると主人が「さあ、もっと上席へ」と促してくれるからである。しかし、或る時、いつものように最下座に座ったところ、誰も声をかけずに宴会は終わった。彼は深く傷つき、以来、宴会に行かなくなってしまった。
いつも自分を最下座に座らせるのが謙遜ではない。

「上席を好む」
人には「席」というものがあるようだ。自分の座るべき場所を見失うのは、自分と席の間の調和が崩れているからかもしれない。自分の変化によって自分の内の席も変える必要がある。
自分と席が調和することはほとんどない。席はその都度のものだからである。
最も恐いのは、席は自分の内にあるというのに、自分の席が見当たらないことだ。「好み」が暴走したのだろうか。

「長い祈りを好む」
会堂で上席に着くパリサイ人は、その席で「長い祈り」をささけることを好んだ。（マルコ12:39）
その祈りはすでに「演説」である。神にではなく人々に聞かせているのだ。

律法学者やパリサイ人たちは宴会では上座に、会堂では上席に座ることを好んだ。彼らは饗宴であれ、會堂であれ、常に「上座」を好んだ。彼らは「また、やもめたちの家を食い倒し」会堂では「見えのために長い祈」をした。（マルコ12:39）その為「彼らはもっときびしいさばきを受けるであろう」（マルコ12: 40） ユダヤの宴会や会堂では地位、身分、年齢によって座るべき席が決められた。（創世43:33）
旧約聖書外典のベン=シラの知恵32:1~13には宴会での心得が記されている。宴会の幹事に選ばれても、「有頂天」にならずに、気をつかって作法正しく席に着き、長老は知識をひけらかすことなく正確な知識をもて語り、音楽の邪魔をしておしゃべりを続けるな。宴会が終えたら速やかに退席し、最後まで居残って家人に迷惑をかけるな、など、具体的な知恵が込められている。律法学者やパリサイ人たちは読んだことがないいのだろうか？
イエスは、宴会や会堂では決して上席に座らないようにと教えられるのではない。上席に着くことが求められるところでは上席に着くことが謙遜である。上席であれ、末席であれ、それによって自分を高めようとすることが律法学者やパリサイ人の「上席」である。
