「負うべき重荷」
人にはそれぞれ負うべき「重荷」がある。
律法学者、ファリサイ人は「負うべきでない重荷」を負わせ、その無意味な「重荷」を取り除くために指一本貸そうとはしなかった。
イエスは「負うべき重荷」が何かを私に教え、それを背負う力を私にくださる。「私」という「重荷」である。

「グル」
人は自分が負うものに目を留めないことがある。目の前にある「重荷」を、とりあえず自分の負うものと思い込んでしまうところがある。そのようにして一旦背負ってしまったものは、なかなか下ろすことができない。負うもののない背中はさみしいものだ。そのような人が「律法学者、ファリサイ人」を「グル」と呼ぶのかもしれない。

律法学者、パリサイ人は実生活に即して「律法」を解釈し、次々と「規定」を生み出し、「人々の肩」に「重荷」として背負わせた。しかし、彼らは人々かに「重荷」を背負わせ、「重荷」を解消するために「指一本動かそう」としなかった。
律法学者やパリサイ派の人々は、律法を実生活に即して解釈し、様々な「規定」を設けた。イエスが「彼らは言うことは言うが、実行しない」（マタイ23:3 新改訳聖書）と言われたのは、彼らが自分たちの設けた「規定」を人々に押し付けて、自分たちは「実行しない」という意味ではない。彼らは神の律法を「守る」と言いながら、実生活の中で都合のよいように解釈して神の律法を「実行しようとしない」と言われたのである。
我々は「神のことば」に、律法学者やパリサイ人の熱意にまさるものでなければならない。しかし、神のことばに従うことを避けようとして、都合の良い解釈に熱中してはならない。それは、熱心な信仰にみえて、むしろ、「重荷を束ねて人の肩に担わせるが、自分たちはそれを動かすために指一本触れようとはしない」（マタイ23:4 フランシスコ会訳聖書）ことである。
