「時近づけり」
律法学者、ファリサイ人らはイエスを処刑するために身元から離れていった。捕縛するために近づく兵士たちの足音が耳元に感じられるような緊張の中で、イエスはなおも群衆と弟子たちに語り続けられる。
「時が来ました」（マタイ26:45） イエスは近づく「時」のなかで語り給う。

「神そこに在す」
イエスにあって語るものは「近づく時」の中で語らなければならない。何を語るかは、「近づく時」が教えてくれる。我らは何を語るべきかを知らないが、「神そこに在す」ことを知る。

「群衆と弟子たちに」
「群衆」を意味する英語 multitudes はラテン語 multitūdō（多数）に由来する。
人は個人としての存在と、人々としての存在を併せ持つ。イエスはその両方に語られる。私たちは個人としても人々としてもイエスに従う者である。

律法学者たち、パリサイ派の人々はイエスを告発するために去り、群衆はその場に残っていた。（ルカ20:45）。イエスは群衆と弟子たちに語り始められた。イエス処刑の計画は迫っていた。世を去るべきその時が来ようとする中で、イエスには群衆に語っておくべきことが、まだまだ、沢山残されていたのである。
イエスの教えを聞く時は限られている。時を惜しんで耳を傾けなければならない。
エステル記には王は問題が発生すると「法令に詳しい、知恵のある者たち」を集めて相談するのが慣わしであった。
「そこで王は時を熟知している、知恵のある者たちに言った。」エステル記1:13 新改訳聖書
王に仕える「法令に詳しい、知恵のある者たち」は「時を熟知する者たち」であった。
「知恵のことば」は「時を熟知する」者に語られ、王にも助言する。イエスに聞く者は常に、緊張感をもって、時の中に語られるイエスに聞くのである。
