「あなたを新しくする」
「その愛によってあなたを新しくする」 ゼパニヤ3:17 LXX訳
神を愛する愛によって人は自らを「新しく」される。「主は高らかに歌ってあなたのことを喜ばれる」（ゼパニヤ3:17）。

「神を知ること」
人間のすべての営みをもって神を知ったとしても不十分であろう。私は神を知ってはいない、それを含めて神は私を知り給うことを喜ぶ。そのことを私に教えるのも神である。私は神を愛し、愛は愛するものを知ることを求めるのである。

律法学者の「律法の中で、どのいましめがいちばん大切なのですか」（マタイ22:36 口語訳聖書）という問いに、イエスは申命記6:5「あなたは心をつくし、精神をつくし、力をつくして、あなたの神、主を愛さなければならない。」（申命6:5 口語訳聖書）からお答えになった。
「申命記6:5」は「イスラエルよ聞け。われわれの神、主は唯一の主である。」（申命記6:4 口語訳聖書）に導かれており、語頭の「聞け シェマ」からユダヤ人には「シェマ」として知られ、礼拝のたびに唱えられ、ユダヤ人は日に2度は唱え、家の入口に書き記し、小さな箱に入れて額に結んだものであった。（申命記6:7~9）
申命記6:5「心を盡し精神を盡し力を盡して汝の神ヱホバを愛すべし」

マルコ12:29~30 「イエス答へたまふ『第一は是なり『イスラエルよ聽け、主なる我らの神は唯一の主なり。

申命記6:5からマタイは「力を盡し」を「思を盡し」とし、マルコは「心を盡し精神を盡し力を盡し」に「思を盡し」を加えている。
イエスは、シェマを永遠の生命を受けるために守るべき第一の戒めであると教えられた。
「なんぢ心を盡し、精神を盡し、思を盡して主なる汝の神を愛すべし」は信仰の第一の戒めである。
「心 καρδία カルディア」は「精神生活の中心」であり「感情、精神、思考、心」をあらわす。人格の核である。「精神 ψυχή プスゆけー」は「生命としての息」であり「 (感情・意志・知性の根源としての)精神、自我、自己、思い、心」をあらわす。いのちそのものであり、ラテン語 anima アニマの語源である。「思 διάνοια ディアノイア」は「理解力」であり「知力、理解、洞察力、考え、思考力、考え方、感じ方、意図、意思、心」をあらわす。「思想、精神」をもたらす。「盡し ὅλος ホろス」は「全体の、すべての」で、「心、精神、思いの全体を動かして（全体をもって）」の意味である。「愛しなさい ἀγαπάω アガパオー」は「愛せよ、いつくしめ、満足せよ」の意味である。
