ソドムとゴモラの町の罪が重く、その叫びが天に届いたとき、神はそれを見届けるために裁きのみ使いをおくられた。アブラハムは主の前に立ち、「もし、その町に十人の正しい者がいたら、町の全部を滅ぼされるでしょうか」と問うと、神は「その十人のために滅ぼすまい」と答えられた。（創世18:20~33）
王は凶行者の町に「十人」を見出すことができなかったのである。
焼き払われた町の不幸は凶行者がいたことではなく、一人の正しい人がいなかったことである。

王は凶行者を処罰するだけでなく、その町全体を焼き払う。
一つの町が焼き払われたことについて考察しなければならない。
ことは重大である。

王は軍隊を送り、使者を殺害したものを殺し、その町を焼き払った。
法を支配する者は力で不正を裁く。神もまた不正を裁かれる。しかし、「軍隊」によってではない。神は「平和」によって裁かれる。神は「平和の神」である。

王は派遣した僕たちが恥ずかしめを受けて殺されたことに怒り、軍隊を送り、凶行者を処刑し、その町を焼き払った。
王の怒りは激しく、凶行者だけでなく、彼らの町も裁かれた。
王の遣わした僕たちを殺害した者たちは厳しい裁きを受けることになった。
彼らは王の息子の婚礼を拒んだことを裁かれたのではない。遣わした「僕」を殺害した「人殺しども」としての罪が裁かれたのである。
しかし、「王の僕の殺害」は「王の息子の婚礼への拒絶」から引き出された罪である。
王の怒りには、己が息子の婚礼を無視し、暴力に訴えてまで反対する「親しき友人たち」への深い悲しみがある。
