家造りらが不要なものとして捨てた石が建物の主要な「隅の首石」となった。
エルサレムの神殿に仕える祭司長や律法学者たちは、「神の国」の礎石として不要なものとしてイエス・キリストを捨てたが、そのイエス・キリストを「隅の首石」として神の国が建てられる。
祭司長や律法学者や民の長老たちは、彼らの捨てたイエス・キリストの上に落ちて砕かれる。それだけでなく、イエス・キリストが「人の上に倒れるならその人は微塵と砕かれる」のである。
