イエスは弟子たちに「あなたがたは私の杯を飲むだろう。しかし、御国でだれがイエスの右に、誰が左につくかは父なる神がお決めになる」と告げられた。
＜實に汝らは我が酒杯を飮むべし＞
ヤコブとヨハネはイエスの「この杯を飲むことができるか」という問いに、直ちに「できます」と答え、イエスは「あなた方は確かにわたしの杯を飲むであろう」と告げられた。「イエスの杯」は主の受けられた「十字架の受難」の意味である。
その言葉の通りに、ヤコブは弟子たちの最初の殉教者になった（使徒12:2）。ヨハネは百歳くらいまで生き、殉教はしなかったが、ペテロと共に投獄され、その晩年にはパトモス島で苦難を受けている（使徒4:3、黙示1:9）。

しかし、イエスが栄光を受けられるとき、誰がイエスの左右に座するかは、イエスの定められることではなく、天の父によって備えられることである。「ただ備えられている人々だけに許されることである」（マルコ10:40）。

信仰は「苦難」を選ぶものではないが、それが来るのを避けることもしない。キリト者は「キリストの苦難とそれに続く栄光」（Ⅰペテロ1:11）にあずかる者である。
