「ある嫉妬」
まる一日を働いた人は午後五時から一時間だけ働けた人の「喜び」に「嫉妬」する。彼らは地中海の熱い南風のもたらす炎暑の下で「重くのしかかるものを抱えた」つらい一日を過ごしたと主張する。
しかし、一日を働いた人は、午後五時の人々が同じ炎暑の「広場」で「なすこともなく過ごした十一時間」を忘れている。その苦しみがあったからこそ、午後五時の人々は炎暑の下でぶどう園にいられることに「喜び」を見出したのである。
人はみな、その一生を「海からの炎暑の下で重くのしかかるものを抱えて」過ごす。しかし、「抱えるもの」すらない一生があるとすれば、それよりもはるかに耐え難いものである。
「重くても」負うもののあるのは、負うもののない空しさよりはるかに幸せである。

「明日の仕事」
老いてから、自分と隣人の「仕事量」の比較をするな。彼がそれらの日々に受けたものを知ったところで何の役に立つというのか。それよりも老いてからの「明日の仕事」を考えるべきである。

夕方五時に雇われわずか一時間労働したものの受けた「報い」と「一日の勞と暑さとを忍びたる我ら」の受けた「報い」が同じことに抗議する。
「辛抱して βάρος バロス」は「重くのしかかるもの」で「苦労、労苦」の意味である。
ぶどう園の主人に抗議した人は、主人に自分は「一日じゅう労苦と暑さを辛抱した」と言う。そこに彼のぶどう園での一日がある。彼の過ごした一日は「労苦と暑さへの辛抱」であった。そこには「仕事」への喜びがない。
「不満」はぶどう園での仕事そのものにあり、そのことが報酬への不満として現れたのであろう。
神の園で働く者は、少しでも長く働くことのできることに深い喜びを感じるだろう。なすべき仕事が少しでも長くできることを喜ぶのである。
神を知り、その働きを与えられる者は、もっと早い時期にこの仕事を始めることができたらと思わない人はいない。彼は決して、「一日じゅう労苦と暑さを辛抱した」とは言わないだろう。
