夕方になり一日の労働が終わると、ぶどう園の主人は監督人に最後に来た者から順に最初に雇われた者まで賃金を払うように命じた。

　＜『勞動人を呼びて、後の者より始め、先の者にまで賃銀をはらへ』＞

律法には賃金はその日のうちに支払うことが決められていた。

「雇い人の労賃の支払いを翌朝まで延ばしてはならない」レビ記19:13

　＜後の者より始め＞

普通は最初に雇ったものから賃金を支払う。しかし、このぶどう園の主人は管理人に「最後に雇った者から支払いを始める」ように命じる。

雇われた者たちの中で「その日の稼ぎ」を最も必要としている人から「支払」を始める。「最後の者」は日ごろから遅れをとっていたに違いなく、久しぶりに「残り一時間」の「小さな仕事」にありつけたのである。彼には「小さな仕事の稼ぎ」を待つ家族がいたことが想像される。

ぶどう園の主人は雇った順ではなく、「必要」の重さから「支払い」を始めたのであろう。
